April 1: The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 comes into effect.
India launches “Census 2011”, the biggest-ever census attempted in the history of mankind. The first-ever National Population Register will also be prepared to create a biometric national database.

April 5: Sensex gains 243.06 points to end day at 17935.68, its highest close since February 2008.

April 6: Maoists ambush and kill 75 CRPF personnel in the Mukrana forest 3 km from Chintalnar village in Dantewada district, Chhattisgarh.

April 18: Union Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor under a cloud for his alleged involvement in the Kochi IPL franchise bid quits.

April 19: The Supreme Court upholds life term for Manu Sharma for the murder of Jessica Lal on the night of April 29-30, 1999 at a south Delhi restaurant.

April 29: A Delhi-based journalist Nirupama Pathak is found dead under mysterious circumstances at her parents’ house at Tilaya in Jharkhand’s Koderma district.

April 30: Supreme Court Justice Sarosh Homi Kapadia is appointed the 38th Chief Justice of India.
The Lok Sabha adopts the National Green Tribunal Bill, 2009.
